Mental Health Issues Faced By Students in India

In recent years, the mental health of students in India has seen a notable decline. The challenges of academic success, social relationships and the path to an independent life create a terrifying environment that could impact the mental health of students. Identifying these challenges is important to providing students with the support and validation they need during this pivotal time in their lives. In this blog, we will discuss common mental health issues of students and offer coping strategies to help them.

The Mental Health Struggles of Students

Academic Pressure

Academics in college or school can put a lot of pressure on a student’s mental health. The sudden shift in subjects while transitioning from school to college and the introduction of long study hours can be overwhelming. Big dreams with the fear of failure can cause stress and other mental problems if left unchecked. This stress can lead to burnout, anxiety and a sense of unworthiness among students.

Depression

Depression among students can stem from personal, academic and family pressures. The pressure to score good marks, adapt to a new environment and meet family expectations can be exhausting for academic minds. Students with this kind of pressure tend to be overwhelmed and isolate themselves, causing them to lose hope and be engulfed in sadness.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a common issue among college students due to rigorous academic demands and uncertainty about their future. Worries about academics, social acceptance and post-graduation plans can lead to severe stress and anxiety, affecting the daily life and overall mental health of the students.

Sleep Deprivation

College life can be described in two words – late nights and sleeplessness, whether from studying, socialising or exploring a new place. While these activities can be enjoyable, chronic sleep deprivation can harm their mental health, affecting mood, regular cognitive function and overall lifestyle.

Suicidal Ideation

In severe cases, depression can get too serious and students may experience suicidal thoughts. It is crucial to identify these issues, destigmatise mental health struggles and provide accessible mental health resources on college campuses to offer support and let them know they matter.

Addiction

Addiction to social media, alcohol, tobacco, gaming, drugs and other vices may be a pleasure for the time being but lead to long-term mental health issues like rumination and depression. It’s essential to recognise and address these addictive behaviours in the early stages.

Social Pressure

Navigating the social landscape of college can be challenging. The pressure to fit in and meet social expectations can negatively impact mental health, leading to stress and anxiety. Not only this but students getting involved with “Bad Company” (as one’s mother would warn them about), can cause behavioural issues and carelessness leading to more mental stress.

Overcoming Mental Health Issues

Stay Positive

Maintaining a positive attitude is key. While we must acknowledge and experience emotions like sadness and anger, it's equally important not to let these feelings dominate our lives. They can help you navigate difficult situations, but being self-aware can help you a ton. When life gives you lemons, sell them and get oranges.

Practice Gratitude

Focus on the positive aspects of your life. It would not hurt to be grateful for the things you have rather than worry about those you don’t. It’s simple logic. Keep a gratitude journal or mentally note your blessings each day, as it can shift your focus from unnecessary stress to the positive elements of your life.

Improve Sleep Habits

Prioritise good sleep hygiene. Avoid bright screens before bed and give yourself time to unwind without technology. Consider listening to calming music or a podcast instead of staring at a screen. Your ears can consume as much content as your eyes, if not more.

Take Care of Your Physical Health

Physical and emotional wellness are interconnected. Ensure you get enough sleep, maintain a balanced diet and engage in regular physical activity to support your overall well-being. Go for morning runs and never skip breakfast!

Spend Time in Nature

Nature has a calming effect and can help reduce stress and anger. You can read your favourite book in luscious greenery or if you live in a city, you can go to your nearest park and spend some meditative time there. Spending time outdoors can improve your mood and mental health.

Connect with Others

Humans are social animals and healthy relationships are vital for our mental health. Building a supportive social network can help mitigate the effects of stress and provide a sense of belonging.

Find Meaning in Life

Having a sense of purpose can motivate you to achieve your goals. This could be through your career, volunteering, learning new skills, or exploring spirituality. These things take time, so don’t rush it, but when you do find it, never let that happiness go.

Set Priorities and Goals

Figure out what tasks need immediate attention and what can wait. Learn to say "no" to additional responsibilities if you feel overwhelmed. College is where young minds develop a sense of belonging by following a certain activity. It could be singing, acting, art, business or anything that makes them happy. At the end of the day, acknowledge and appreciate your accomplishments and be ready for tomorrow.

Develop Healthy Coping Skills

Healthy coping mechanisms such as mindfulness and meditation can help you deal with tough situations. These practices can help you face problems directly, take practical steps to solve them, adapt and be able to handle new problems and give you an “I won’t give up” mindset.

By addressing these mental health challenges and implementing these coping strategies, students can navigate their academic journey with better emotional maturity and support.
